"Buffaloes were killed in such numbers and with so much waste as railroads entered the west that whole industries were born from the carnage. Often railroad passengers would shoot at herds as they lumbered by the tracks and were left to rot. Enterprising individuals would collect the mounds of bones to be shipped east for fertilizer."
